For Christmas, I knit these soft toys for each member of the family. The set wasn't quite complete, because I didn't know what color to knit for the baby. I decided on "Spring Green" and finished it today.
We keep them in a basket on the fireplace, and thankfully someone is always willing to play catch with me.
Being there to teach my children to throw and catch has become one of my favorite experiences as a mother.
We had a long hallway in our Skokie apartment--perfect for playing catch with Andrew and Bryn. We spent many cold days inside with them running up and down the hall. They never could get enough of that game, and I can still hear their laughter.

The best made plans . . . . (snow day)
Looking out my garage today we have this view.
Funny. Yesterday was the scheduled "bad weather makeup day" in case we had one.
Either it was too scheduled too early, or the storm was too late.
The kids are loving that they were released from school 2 hours early today and the arrival time tomorrow morning is 2 hours late. So happy to see snow in TX!

Doll quilt
This Christmas, Bryn asked Santa Claus for a doll bed. She received a piece of foam and some pieces of flannel. This is what she envisioned and I worked on. It is done, and hopefully will still be around when she has a daughter. She said it is for Emily, the Cabbage patch doll who was mine and came home with us from Wyoming this summer.
The photo doesn't show the back, but it is the same green color as the petals on the flowers, which has a tie-dyed effect to it. The binding is the same color pink as the center of the middle flower.
This close up is to show the blanket stitch on the appliqued flower.
New skills: applique, blanket stitch

The Secret Garden
"Where you tend a rose, my lad,
A thistle cannot grow."
by Francis Hodgson Burnett
illustrated by Graham Rust, in memory of his mother
In 10 words or less: My favorite fiction book ever written? Read in winter.
What I liked: Timeless, classic story of the power of love and friendship. It is about hope and the renewal of spirit and life.
What I disliked: Nothing!
Themes: Parenthood, friendship, God, life & death, renewal, hope, progress, the power of thoughts
Reading Level: According to the "Accelerated Reader Program", it is a 6th grade reading level.
Favorite Character: Susan Sowerby.
With 12 children, who include Dickon and Martha, Mrs. Sowerby is the voice to whom everyone listens. My favorite line of hers: (Martha visits home on her day out and her mom, after hearing more about Mary, decides to buy her the "sensiblist toy a child can have."
" . . . I've got four places to put every penny, but I'm just going to take tuppence out of it to buy that child a skippin' rope," Susan Sowerby explained to Martha as she used Martha's wages to purchase a skipping rope for Mary (p. 56).
I have at least four places for each penny that passes my hands, too.
I'd like to be like Susan Sowerby--she's got the answers to solve all the problems in the story, and everyone in the fictional community loves her. Is it possible to earn her status without the 12 children?
My experiences with this story:
-Attended the live musical at Maine South High School--excellent production
-Thanksgiving 2007, road trip to Wyoming from Chicago. Listened to the book on tape from the library. The woman who "read" the book had such a great, soothing voice.
--January 2010 Re-read this book while nursing Edwin.
-One of my grandmothers was from England, where the story takes place, and the other grandmother had a green thumb, so reading this book reminds me of both of them, too.
My Gardens:
One of my earliest memories is of planting a garden in the spring. In Wyoming that means May or June. My Grandma Parks had a green house and would bring us plants she had started from seeds. Both she and Grandpa came every Memorial day to help us plant. I remember kneeling with my grandma in the dirt in my front yard, digging holes for planting flowers. Later, I tended flower beds at my high school where I worked on the lawn crew. Nathan and I had a plot in a community garden in Skokie for two years, and we have planted tomatoes in pots other summers. We look forward to having a "bit of earth" ourselves.
Dickon's secret to success in making plants grow:
'All a chap's got to do to make 'em thrive, Mother,' he would say, 'is to be friends with 'em for sure. They're just like th' "creatures." If they're thirsty give 'em a drink, and if they're hungry, give 'em a bit o' food. They want to live same as we do' (p. 186).
FYI:
Bryn read this book for her school's reading program in three days. It was worth 14 points (which is a lot--most of her other books are worth 5-6), and she wanted to speak in Yorkshire to me when she was done. I've offered Andrew a job to it to Caitlin.
This is the first time I've read it with illustrations. I like them. When I went to search for a cover photo, I found out that he is not the only illustrator of this book, there are at least 445 editions of it.
A parting thought about gardening: p.176
"Oh! the things which happened in that garden! If you have never had a garden, you cannot understand, and if you have had a garden, you will know that it would take a whole book to describe all that came to pass there."

By the numbers
HOW MANY?
Of your children were in the portable crib this morning?
3. Hopefully not all at once, but it would not be too surprising.
Packages of newborn diapers has your baby used?
5-6. Nothing is precise anymore, my brain is fuzzy. I'm opening the last one today, he needs to go up a size. A further complication to getting a complete count is the half package we brought home from the hospital and the half package given to us by a friend that had not been used up. Do those two "halves" make a whole?
Calories can your two year old consume while you take a nap?
Not sure I want the answer to this one. At least 400. I found 5 candy wrappers, a cereal box on the couch, cookies on the kitchen floor, a half eaten candy cane in her sticky mouth and hands, and a report of missing strawberries from the fridge.
Hours of TV will your five yr. old watch while you take a nap?
Unlimited, as in she's never gotten up from the couch and said, "I've had enough.". This morning it was 2. No I didn't sleep that long, during part of it I was nursing and showering. I did get a lovely 40 minute nap out of it.
Children are invited to "Pizza with the Principal"?
A & B are eating lunch in the principal's office today because they achieved a certain number of points in the Accelerated Reader program. Way to go! Can't wait to find out how many others were there.
Loaves of bread baked this week?
3
Recipes in my file of "Recipes to Try"?
Don't want to know. It's two inches thick. Must stop collecting more! Please don't send me any. That doesn't even touch the cookbooks. Time to purge. I would happily give away "Crock Pot Cooking" to anyone interested. It was an impulse purchase, on the $5 table at the bookstore. Must stop reading blogs with recipes.
Times have you ordered fabric online?
Once, and it's on it's way. Can't wait to open that package.
Pieces of fabric are in it? 3
Times has Ed gone to take children to school this week?
Two.
Minutes have you used your exercise bike this week? 27
More times will you have to buy laundry soap in TX?
NONE! I have 6 containers now and think it is enough to get me to June.
I love numbers. A lady I know in Chicago counts the number of loads of laundry she does. When I found out, it made me laugh--and I thought it was BRILLIANT! I started keeping track of the number of loaves of bread I bake. I listed them in my journal in 2009, but haven't totaled them. Some numbers you don't want to know, others are funnier to find out. What are your numbers?
p.s. Deal of the week: 5 lb bag of TX grapefruit for $1.47.
